Chinese Character '福Fu'
"福Fu", one of the Chinese characters that best epitomize China's time-honored culture, is a must in Spring Festival celebrations. Nowadays, "福fu," literally meaning auspiciousness, blessing or happiness, usually appears as a cultural symbol to express people's wishes for the coming new year. Yet, in the past, the character mainly meant luck and fortune, which also represented the unanimous hope of the society. The tradition of pasting the character "福Fu" on walls, doors and doorposts has existed among the people for a long time. According to Menglianglu, a book recording the folk customs in the Song Dynasty (960-1127), people at that time had already been practicing the tradition.
The character can either be written or printed. The accompanying patterns usually include a variety of themes like the god of longevity, a birthday peach, a carp, a dragon and a phoenix as well as other themes. The character written on paper can be pasted both normally and upside down, because in Chinese the "up-sided 福fu" is homophonic with "福fu comes (fu dao le)", both being pronounced as "福fu dao le".

Chinese Traditional Musical Instrument: The hulusi ( 葫芦丝 húlusī) or cucurbit flute
The Hulusi, or the cucurbit flute, is free-reed aerophone who is played amongst the Dai (Thai) and the Yi minorities in Yunnan China. Other minorities in the same area, the Chinese side of the Golden Triangle area, use the instrument to communicate when working in the fields. The Dai people call the instrument a "Bilingdao". Composed of a gourd, main pipes, reeds and auxiliary pipes, the cucurbit flute sounds beautiful and heartwarming. It is ideal for expressing soft and tender feelings. As the sounds are as soft and graceful as shaking silk, the flute is also called "Bottle Gourd Silk".There is a folklore in the Dai nationality: Long ago,the mountain torrents broke out, a young man of Dai nationality picked up a large gourd to put it in the river, broke through the stormy river and rescued his sweetheart, his faithful love moved the Buddha, the Buddha fitted the gourd with tubes, the young man blowed a wonderful music, and calmed the mountain torrents, he saved all people and restored his hometown. From then on cucurbit flute was passed down from generation to generation in the Dai people.
